I heart Janine Basil

I love Janine Basil's retro style hats, fascinators, headpieces and hair accessories. You can check out Janine's work on Etsy at Janine Basil Shop. My favorite piece in her collection- Super Hero Sound bite Headbands. Her work is awesome, unique and inspiring, as a hairstylist and comic book fan I adore the playfulness of her hair pieces. Crazy as it sounds how cute would it be if a Bridal Party wore these to a wedding?

Night of the Living Red: True Blood

Sorry for the Hiatus, The past few weeks I've felt drained for some reason, Speaking of Drained...True Blood Season 4 Premiered last night. What did you think? I was disappointed that Queen Sophie wasn't in the episode, I'm dying to know what happened between her and Bill and When did Bill become King? Hes such a Creep, I'm team Eric, I pretty much watch the show just to see Eric.
I think True Blood has more Red Heads than any other show on television. People used to believe that Red Heads were Vampires. All 3 Ladies on True Blood dye they're hair red for the roles. Sophie Ann and Jessica are more strawberry blonde and Arlene is more of an intense Red.

Sophie-Anne Leclerq- the vampire queen of Lousianna is played by Evan Rachel Wood.
Sophie-Anne was born in the late 1000s and was treated very poorly by men in her human life. She possesses a great knowledge of the supernatural and her personality is that of a spoiled child. She's my favorite vampire aside from Eric.

Jessica Hamby- is a young Vampire played by Deborah Ann Woll
Jessica was turned into a vampire by Bill Compton.Since she is new she only possesses common vampire powers. She does not enjoy mainstreaming and dates a human named Hoyt Fortenberry. Deborah Ann's natural hair color is blonde and she dyes it red for the show.
Arlene Fowler-played by Carrie Preston
Arlene is a waitress at Merlotte's and is human. She is also naturally a blonde and sported a wig for the first 2 seasons of True Blood.

I'm so excited to see what Season 4 of True blood will bring...Vampires Werewolves Shifters Witches and Fairies....

Bridal Hair Competition

My school is hosting a Bridal Competition on July 13, I'm pretty darn excited. And this past weekend I went home to visit my family and friends. I went to see my good friend Kelly, who is going to be my model for the event. We did a practice hairstyling run through, I can't thank Kelly enough for letting me come over late on Saturday after she had been up since 4:30 am. She sat patiently through me fussing over her hair and then offered to put on her dress to have the full effect. Kell's hair looked great, I can't wait for the competition. I'm not going to reveal the photos from the dress rehearsal but below is a photo of Kelly and I at a wedding in 2005.

Bagels Bloody's and Beavering

So about a a month ago I invited some friends over and we had
Bagels, Bloody's and Beavering.
"Wait, What the hell is Beavering?" you might be asking. Hmm...Let me start from the beginning, I asked Ashley to Ombre my hair but I wanted more of a "Dimmer Switch" effect, meaning I didn't want people to see my hair and say "Hey that girls hair is Ombre'd" or "Her hair is two different color"  not that they would....but anyways I wanted a subtle look. So one night Ashley was talking to her mom about different techniques she had seen on the interweb, and when she describe a technique where you Tease the client's hair and then paint the highlights onto the portion you have left, Ashley's mom (who was a hairstylist) said in a southern belle accent "Oh child, you mean Furring?"  (I'm paraphrasing here and I don't know Ash's mom but I'd like to think that she has a southern ladylike accent) Anyways....Apparently to achieve a subtle Ombre look you need to Furr (tease) the hair. Furring doesn't sound right when you say "bagels bloody's and furring" But beavers have fur and so "Beavering" was born.

The four B's "Bagels, Bloody's Bleach & Beavering"

Anyways, I wanted to post the pictures of my hair. Thanks Ashley for Beavering my hair, I love it! We're going to be changing up my weave very soon and I'm so excited about it.

Beauty and the Beast: Jemma Kidd Makeup Master class

I picked up this book at the library the other day. Its really awesome. Jemma Kidd is a former model and now a famous makeup artist. The book is huge and filled with so much information. Jemma did a great job breaking things down and making the book very visually pleasing. And whether your new to makeup or have been applying it for decades, this book is a great investment for you. Newbies won't be overwhelmed and she list many options and encourages you to experiment. She features great tips and side notes even seasoned artists may learn a thing or two. She does day to night, Beach or boardroom, special occasion or casual looks and works with every skin tone under the sun. I definitely recommend adding Make-up Masterclass to your library.

Night of the Living Red: Emma Stone

via Mtv.com
Emma Stone won the VMA award for best comedic performance for Easy A last week. I saw Easy A and it wasn't the best movie but I have to say Emma is a pretty funny chick. She was great in Superbad and ZombieLand too. Oddly Enough Emma is not a natural red head but was born blonde, she dyed her hair for her role in Superbad and is most recognized for her auburn locks. She's going to be in the upcoming "The Amazing Spiderman" as Gwen Stacy (a blonde), which I'm very much looking forward to seeing.
Emma has cemented her role as Hollywood's Favorite little redhead, replacing Lindsay Lohan
I feel like had Lindsay Lohan stayed Red and also stayed out of trouble she probably could've landed many of Ms. Stone's roles.  I'm still hoping she can make a comeback, since I loved her in Mean Girls...anyway thats neither here nor there.
Back to Ms. Stone, who 1. is an awesome actress, talented funny and professional 2. she's a pretty kickass redhead, she manages to look great and show off her personal flare for fashion.

Hair's How: Faux Bob

A faux bob is a great style that allows you to play with the idea of having short hair without the commitment of cutting off your long locks. Last Fall I wore my hair in a faux bob to my cousin's wedding and loved the look so much that I ended up cutting 13 inches of my hair and donating it to locks of love.
To Achieve a Faux bob your hair should be longer than shoulder length with layers.
Before: Long Hair

After: Faux Bob
You will need:
-Curling iron 1-1.5 inch
-Tail comb
-Pony tail elastic tie
-Bobby Pins and U- Pins (buy the pins that match your hair color)
-Hair Spray ( I love Loreal Elnett Strong Hold)
-Optional accessory (Rhinestone clips, flowers, headband)

1.) Curl your entire head using the desired curl pattern. As you are curling you should wrap each hair section  around itself and pin it to your head this will produce a long lasting curl.
2.) Once you are finished take a few minutes to let the curls cool and set, I usually apply my makeup since all my hair is pinned up and out of my face. You can begin to remove pins from the curls that are nearest the nape of your neck in the back. You want to gather the longest layer of hair into a low ponytail.
3.) You can then take the hair that's in the ponytail and roll it from ends up to the base or wrap the pony into a bun and pin it or I like to braid it and then flat pin it up against my head. It all depends on your hair type and the look that you want. Just make sure it is secure and discretely pinned.
4.) Once your longest layers are pinned up you can remove the pins from the curls on the top and sides. Loosen the curls and reshape with your fingers. If you have any long strands you can use the U-pins to form a shorter curl and pin hair into a bob. Your hair should fall in between your shoulders and your chin. You want the illusion of short hair without having to actually cut it.
5.) Finish with hair spray. If you want volume on top tease with your tail comb and then add your accessory of choice.

Night of the Living Red: Mystique

Mystique is a Female Villain from the Marvel Comic X-men. She has superpowers, most notable is her ability to shapeshift and when she is not posing as someone else she has blue skin yellow eyes and mahogany red hair. In the film versions she is portrayed by Rebecca Romijn and Jennifer Lawrence. I'm very excited to see X-men First Class,  Mystique is one of my favorite comic book characters.

Hasta la vista, Alpha!

Alpha Hair Level Project

Tomorrow is my last day in Alpha. Its crazy to think that I've been in School for 12 weeks now. Time flies when your having fun. Looking back on Alpha unit I can definitely say I'm happy its over. It was much more Theory (book work) compared to Intro unit. And I didn't realize how important chemistry is when it comes to hair.

What I've learned in Alpha: I'm not a fan of setting perms...I'd rather pour bleach in my eye than roll perm rods. Its torture and your entire body hurts when your finished. I like doing color a lot but not as much as I love cutting hair. There's so many factors that lead to great looking hair color and if you look hard enough you can see different under tones in peoples hair color.  My new nerdy game is identifying what level and tone peoples hair color is on the train.

The picture above is of my color swatch project, we had to make different levels of color using bleach and Demi color and then use those swatches to make a picture. I wanted to make something I would hang in my apartment so since our living room is horror themed I figured the Addams Family would fit in perfectly.

I also want to Thank my friends who came in to be models during my alpha unit! Especially Kristina from Sucker4 Sequins cause she sent out messages to her W girls network to help me out. I'll be posting my model photos in my portfolio soon.
