Rest In Peace: Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse passed away over the weekend, I wanted to pay tribute to her & her signature hair. I decided to only post flattering photos of Amy that were taken prior to her drug abuse.  I really enjoyed her music & her style. She was talented and young, its very sad and unfortunate. Amy Winehouse's personal struggles & turmoil reflected who she was as an artist. She could never quite get it together.

As for Amy's style , you can definitely say it was Unique and all her own, So much so that the Halloween after her record, Back to Black, was released my friend Margaret dressed like her. With just a Teasing brush and Black eyeliner you can achieve a look that channels Ms. Winehouse.  Her appearance was an exaggerated and extreme with her signature  Giant Beehive and Dark Cateye liner. If you get a chance download Marc Ronson and Amy Winehouse's song "Valerie" Its amazing.

So Long Beta I, Hello Beta 2

In addition to the Bridal Competition it was our last week in Beta I.  I really enjoyed Beta I and during that time I feel like I became a stronger, more confident colorist. In Beta I, we worked Dispense and had to mix everyone color formulas. Ms. Jessica also taught us how to Balayage, this technique allows for more strategic color placement because you paint the product on the client hair.
I LOVE BALAYAGE, I think its the artist in me.
The photos below are of my friend Kate who was one of my first Balayage Clients

She wanted a more natural looking highlight, like she had sun-kissed hair. We both loved the end result. Beta I seemed to go by very quickly, I think it was because I had so much fun with the Bridal Competition and Balayage, we were also on the Salon Floor more than any other unit prior. So far 18 weeks have gone by since I started School, I seriously can't believe it.
Special thank you to all my models including Kate, Dianna, Lauren, Joe, Brad, Mark, Elizabeth, Christie, Robin M, Kelly, Barbara, my friend Kathy (who was Ashley's Model)  my beautiful sister Maria  and most importantly my  Amazing Momma!
Can't wait to see what happens in Beta II!
To be continued....

Hair-y Potter: Emma Watson/Hermione Granger

Emma Watson has portrayed Hermione Granger since 2001 in the Harry Potter films. She was only 9 when she landed the coveted Female lead in the film adaptation of the book series. She gradually grew out of her signature mousy brown frizzy hair and bangs and has recently been rocking the red carpets with an adorable pixie cut.

Hair Icon: Audrey Hepburn

"For beautiful eyes, look for the good in others; for beautiful lips, speak only words of kindness; and for poise, walk with the knowledge that you are never alone."- Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn is a fashion and beauty icon, She's a huge inspiration to me and I think everything about her is absolutely lovely. Her style was classic, feminine, elegant, smart and minimal. She is an iconic example of a gamine. As for Audrey's hair, I believe what Marylin Monroe was for blondes, Audrey is for brunettes.
And no one rocks bangs and an up do quite like her.

School Daze: Blow Outs

Aveda.com
Yesterday we had a blow dry competition at Carsten Aveda. All the evening students performed a scalp, shoulder and hand massage using Aveda stress relieving Blue Oil and Hand Relief lotion, we washed our clients hair and then we were given about an hour & a half to blow dry and style their hair. Unfortunately, amongst all the excitement and chaos I forgot to get a before photo of my model Amy. (this happens to me more often than I'd like and halfway through the service I end up cursing at myself for forgetting). My original plan was to blow Amy's hair stick straight but at the last minute decided to over direct and rotate her hair to create volume and body, I'm happy I changed my mind and I loved the end result. When I was halfway done, I glanced around to check out the competition and noticed a girl in a blue dress with brunette hair and beautiful curls...my jaw dropped I had never seen a blowout look so polished and stunning especially within such a short amount of time. I had heard through the grape vine that there was a student named Oksana in one of the other classes who did absolutely amazing blowouts. Once the dust settled (and I picked my jaw up off the floor), Instructors went around from model to model to assess our work and then they announced the well deserved winner was Oksana, she won a spa day. If there's one thing I've learned its that A blowout can make or break your cut or color service. It may seem like a simple task blowing hair out but truthfully it is not easy to achieve the perfect final result and as a stylist in training it is something I'm going to strive to be great at.

Thanks Amy for being my model, I had so much fun!

Hair Idol: Rachel Bilson

Rachel Bilson is an actress most recognized for her role on The O.C. (2003). I only watched the first season on that show but I've always loved Rachel for her sense of style and her hair (I have a soft spot for brunette ladies... I have major girl crushes on Rachel Bilson, Mila Kunis, Minka Kelly, Kristen Kreuk, Nina Dobrev, Rachel Leigh Cook and of course Megan Fox just to name a few)  Anywho, Rachel currently can be found starting trends (Hello Ombre!), designing her clothing line and writing a column for Instyle Magazine.

I've collected a few of my favorite Rachel Hair Moments Below, Enjoy!

Royal Wedding: Princess Bride

Princess Catherine's dress was inspired  from Grace Kelly and Queen Elizabeth II.

The #1 rule from Brides to be- Your look should not be a glamorized over styled version of yourself
and Kate definitely followed suite. She did her own makeup and told her stylist
"William must recognize me by the time I reach the alter."
Her over all look was traditional, classic Beauty which I find to be fitting of a Princess Bride.

...And they lived Happily Ever After (I hope)
THE END
