Healthy Food is in Fashion- Show/ Fall Gala

Last week a few students were chosen from Carsten Aveda to work at a Fashion Show to support Healthy Lifestyles. The Fashion Show was held in the library at the New York Academy of Medicine and also included food samples from 20 organic restaurants & caterers & a silent auction.

This was my first time styling for a  fashion show & I'm not gonna lie, it was super fun and really exciting. I love my friends from school, My teacher once told me that she loved how our little group always seemed to have each others back and help each other out. This industry is so competitive and so I appreciate the fact that while I'm in school, I can consider my fellow classmates friends first and peers second. The only person I'm in competition with is myself. I've learned so much from my friends and we work in collaborations rather than as competitors.

I heart Janine Basil

I love Janine Basil's retro style hats, fascinators, headpieces and hair accessories. You can check out Janine's work on Etsy at Janine Basil Shop. My favorite piece in her collection- Super Hero Sound bite Headbands. Her work is awesome, unique and inspiring, as a hairstylist and comic book fan I adore the playfulness of her hair pieces. Crazy as it sounds how cute would it be if a Bridal Party wore these to a wedding?

Bagels Bloody's and Beavering

So about a a month ago I invited some friends over and we had 
Bagels, Bloody's and Beavering. 
"Wait, What the hell is Beavering?" you might be asking. Hmm...Let me start from the beginning, I asked Ashley to Ombre my hair but I wanted more of a "Dimmer Switch" effect, meaning I didn't want people to see my hair and say "Hey that girls hair is Ombre'd" or "Her hair is two different color"  not that they would....but anyways I wanted a subtle look. So one night Ashley was talking to her mom about different techniques she had seen on the interweb, and when she describe a technique where you Tease the client's hair and then paint the highlights onto the portion you have left, Ashley's mom (who was a hairstylist) said in a southern belle accent "Oh child, you mean Furring?"  (I'm paraphrasing here and I don't know Ash's mom but I'd like to think that she has a southern ladylike accent) Anyways....Apparently to achieve a subtle Ombre look you need to Furr (tease) the hair. Furring doesn't sound right when you say "bagels bloody's and furring" But beavers have fur and so "Beavering" was born.

Anyways, I wanted to post the pictures of my hair. Thanks Ashley for Beavering my hair, I love it! We're going to be changing up my weave very soon and I'm so excited about it.

Beauty and the Beast: Jemma Kidd Makeup Master class

I picked up this book at the library the other day. Its really awesome. Jemma Kidd is a former model and now a famous makeup artist. The book is huge and filled with so much information. Jemma did a great job breaking things down and making the book very visually pleasing. And whether your new to makeup or have been applying it for decades, this book is a great investment for you. Newbies won't be overwhelmed and she list many options and encourages you to experiment. She features great tips and side notes even seasoned artists may learn a thing or two. She does day to night, Beach or boardroom, special occasion or casual looks and works with every skin tone under the sun. I definitely recommend adding Make-up Masterclass to your library.

School Daze: Kristina from Suckers 4 Sequins

My good friend Kristina wrote a little blurb about her experience as my client at Carsten Aveda. Which is so sweet & I can't thank her enough (maybe free haircuts for life will suffice?) I love that Kristina and my other friends have volunteered their time and noggins to the greater good of my experience in Cosmetology School. Not only do I appreciate the support from all of you but I also appreciate the time I get to spend catching up with you.

"A few Fridays ago, I was lucky enough to be in town for once and be a model for Cat!  I love getting my hair, makeup, nails, etc done so when Cat asked me to come in, I was thrilled. She did skip waves on me and it was so much fun!  Cat may only be a new student but you almost couldn't tell.  She breezed through setting my hair and the curls came out better than I expected on my fine hair.  A few of her fellow students even made comments about how great she is and I couldn't agree more. I have known Cat since high school and with her talent and appreciation for art, I can't think of a better profession for her and would trust her to do anything on me.  I definitely look forward to being a model for her in the future - I even told her she could do a body wave perm on me!"- Kristina, Suckers 4 Sequins

 

Faces By Javier

My friend and fellow Cosmetology student, Javier is a seasoned and very talented Makeup artist. He specializes in natural beauty and strives to highlight the striking features of his clients. Javier is one of the City's most sought after Makeup artists. He's worked with a variety of clients from models and celebrities to brides and career women. His work has been featured  on Mtv, BET and the Today Show. His determination and work ethic are major factors in his successful Makeup career and will surely be an asset as he pursues  his education in Cosmetology.

School Daze: So Long Intro, Hello Alpha

Last week ended our stint in Intro and now we've moved on to the Chemical phase. In Alpha we will be covering Chemistry Theory & our practical portion will involve:  Coloring/ Highlights- Perms (not your Granny's perm think Gisele-like Body waves)-Relaxers.

We cover the science behind the chemicals and products that make styling and coloring hair possible.I'm interested in how I will adapt to coloring since coming into this I felt that it would be my weak link. Who knows? I may end up loving color the most. We will just have to wait and see...

School Daze

So I started school and I love it. The first week consisted of Carsten Wilms, founder of Carsten Aveda, teaching us the french technique of cutting. Most people and stylists are completely unaware that there are different techniques to cutting. Heck, I had no idea until i started school. Carsten Aveda teaches two forms, French and English (the more common).

The best way to describe the difference between the two is to relate it to an artist painting on canvas.

English- an artist would paint a small area at a time, section by section. English cutting results in sharp edgy cuts. Stylist clip hair up and work from back to front.

French - an artist paints working through his entire canvas making sure each stroke relates to the next and the artist steps back to ensure the painting as a whole works well together French cutting results in softer more feminine cuts. Stylist work from the front (top) of hair...all hair remains down and each section cut is directly based on the hair around it as well as the clients features.

We didn't waste any time and by the end of day 1 I had done 2 different styles on my mannequin head, Debra. The rest of the week was the same, Carsten demonstrating on either a mannequin or on a client. The class discussed different observations of Carstens technique and then we would begin to work on our individual Debheads. Overall, The first week of Cosmetology school might have been the most fun I'd had while learning ever. Stay tuned to see where my adventures in Cosmetology school lead me.
