Healthy Food is in Fashion- Show/ Fall Gala

Last week a few students were chosen from Carsten Aveda to work at a Fashion Show to support Healthy Lifestyles. The Fashion Show was held in the library at the New York Academy of Medicine and also included food samples from 20 organic restaurants & caterers & a silent auction.

Flynn: Fingerwaves by Me  Makeup by Silvio

This was my first time styling for a  fashion show & I'm not gonna lie, it was super fun and really exciting. I love my friends from school, My teacher once told me that she loved how our little group always seemed to have each others back and help each other out. This industry is so competitive and so I appreciate the fact that while I'm in school, I can consider my fellow classmates friends first and peers second. The only person I'm in competition with is myself. I've learned so much from my friends and we work in collaborations rather than as competitors.

Talent and plenty of it...

So Long Beta I, Hello Beta 2

In addition to the Bridal Competition it was our last week in Beta I.  I really enjoyed Beta I and during that time I feel like I became a stronger, more confident colorist. In Beta I, we worked Dispense and had to mix everyone color formulas. Ms. Jessica also taught us how to Balayage, this technique allows for more strategic color placement because you paint the product on the client hair.
I LOVE BALAYAGE, I think its the artist in me.
The photos below are of my friend Kate who was one of my first Balayage Clients

She wanted a more natural looking highlight, like she had sun-kissed hair. We both loved the end result. Beta I seemed to go by very quickly, I think it was because I had so much fun with the Bridal Competition and Balayage, we were also on the Salon Floor more than any other unit prior. So far 18 weeks have gone by since I started School, I seriously can't believe it.
Special thank you to all my models including Kate, Dianna, Lauren, Joe, Brad, Mark, Elizabeth, Christie, Robin M, Kelly, Barbara, my friend Kathy (who was Ashley's Model)  my beautiful sister Maria  and most importantly my  Amazing Momma!
Can't wait to see what happens in Beta II!
To be continued....

Bridal Competition

And the winner is.....ASHLEY MICHAEL BIRD
Ashley is my go to girl whenever I want my hair done, She did my Beavering Highlights and my fingerwave for Kathy's Wedding. Im so Happy for her, Her model was adorable and Ashley is so incredibly talented. When I first started school I felt overwhelmed, slighlty confused and anxious, I turned to Ashley for advice and without hesitation  she helped me and took me under her "Bird" wing and when I asked her what I could do to repay her for her guidance she said
"Pay it forward and help out others when you can"

CONGRATS Ashley!
xoxo

Bridal Competition Makeup

Last Night, Javier from Faces by Javier hosted a Bridal Makeup Tutorial for some friends and I. I got to be the model which was fun cause I've only had my makeup done professional once before. Being the model had its benefits because I could feel how much pressure and the kinds of brush strokes he would use to apply the makeup. The session with Javier will come in very handy next week for the Carsten Aveda Bridal Competition. He gave us lots of tip and techniques to applying makeup to achieve a fresh natural glowing Bride. You can go to his Website to book him for your Special Event or for a Tutorial Session Watch his videos on Youtube to keep up with the  hottest makeup looks.

Product Feature: Air Control

Air Control is a flexible hold long lasting hair spray by Aveda. I'm a fan  and I listed it in my top 5 products. With my school's Bridal Competition just around the corner I stocked up on an extra can of this spray. Air Control provides the perfect amount of hold while still being manageable just what a stylist needs when working with a bridal client. While Air Control works well for an up do it also come in handy when styling everyday looks. It sprays on dry so you hair doesnt have a sticky residue and like many Aveda products its eco-friendly. Air control features an Eco Friendly innovative Aerosol Technology & Aveda’s funding of renewable energy to offset the CO2 associated with the manufacturing, transportation and use of Aveda aerosol hairsprays.

Bridal Hair Competition

My school is hosting a Bridal Competition on July 13, I'm pretty darn excited. And this past weekend I went home to visit my family and friends. I went to see my good friend Kelly, who is going to be my model for the event. We did a practice hairstyling run through, I can't thank Kelly enough for letting me come over late on Saturday after she had been up since 4:30 am. She sat patiently through me fussing over her hair and then offered to put on her dress to have the full effect. Kell's hair looked great, I can't wait for the competition. I'm not going to reveal the photos from the dress rehearsal but below is a photo of Kelly and I at a wedding in 2005.

School Daze: Blow Outs

Aveda.com
Yesterday we had a blow dry competition at Carsten Aveda. All the evening students performed a scalp, shoulder and hand massage using Aveda stress relieving Blue Oil and Hand Relief lotion, we washed our clients hair and then we were given about an hour & a half to blow dry and style their hair. Unfortunately, amongst all the excitement and chaos I forgot to get a before photo of my model Amy. (this happens to me more often than I'd like and halfway through the service I end up cursing at myself for forgetting). My original plan was to blow Amy's hair stick straight but at the last minute decided to over direct and rotate her hair to create volume and body, I'm happy I changed my mind and I loved the end result. When I was halfway done, I glanced around to check out the competition and noticed a girl in a blue dress with brunette hair and beautiful curls...my jaw dropped I had never seen a blowout look so polished and stunning especially within such a short amount of time. I had heard through the grape vine that there was a student named Oksana in one of the other classes who did absolutely amazing blowouts. Once the dust settled (and I picked my jaw up off the floor), Instructors went around from model to model to assess our work and then they announced the well deserved winner was Oksana, she won a spa day. If there's one thing I've learned its that A blowout can make or break your cut or color service. It may seem like a simple task blowing hair out but truthfully it is not easy to achieve the perfect final result and as a stylist in training it is something I'm going to strive to be great at.

Thanks Amy for being my model, I had so much fun!
